Environmental Epidemiology and Small Area Health Statistics

MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health

The MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health (launched on 1 June 2009) is supported by funds from the Medical Research Council and the Health Protection Agency. The Centre is held jointly between Imperial College London and King’s College London

The Director is Prof Paul Elliott.

The Deputy Director is Prof Frank Kelly.

Research groups that are contributing to the Centre include the Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU)  at Imperial College London, the Environmental Research Group at King’s College London, with colleagues at St George’s University of London playing an important supportive role.

Mission:  To be an international centre of excellence for research and training on the health effects of environmental pollutants and the translation of this knowledge to inform national and international policies to improve health.

Objectives: The main conceptual thrust for the Centre is to integrate individual-level and small-area analyses of environmental exposures and health to tackle environmental health problems of public health and scientific importance.

The Centre will take advantage of a) the national Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU) databases which include individual-level health data, and data on populations, environmental exposures and sources of environmental pollution and b) the air quality databases held at King's College London and their modelling capacity.

Research and its application will include:

a) Methods development;

b) Investigation of priority questions in environment and health, through two integrated research themes:

  • Research theme 1: Health effects of sources and emissions of environmental contaminants
  • Research theme 2: Air pollution and health

c) Improving the science base underlying translation into policy.

The Centre is in the process of establishing an extensive postgraduate training programme. A first intake of new PhD students started their studies in autumn 2010.
WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FROM PROSPECTIVE PHD STUDENTS TO START THEIR STUDIES IN OCTOBER 2011. FUNDING IS AVAILABLE FOR 3 YEAR STUDENTSHIPS (MRC ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA APPLY). For details of available projects and how to apply, please go to link http://www.environment-health.ac.uk. Closing date for applications is 13 January 2011.
