Teaching Excellence Awards: 2011 awards
These awards were instituted in April 2003 to mirror those conferred by Imperial upon members for Teaching Excellence. Imperial’s biennial scheme provides for a maximum of 20 Awards in all Faculties of the College, but the awards are not open to the large number of NHS staff who contribute so much to undergraduate medical education.
Following merger of the old medical schools with Imperial, this was identified as a serious omission, and there was strong support for the establishment of similar awards to recognise Teaching Excellence among all NHS staff.
The creation of these awards is widely supported by our partner NHS Trusts. The contribution of over 1000 NHS staff in West London to delivering the undergraduate course (some 70-80% of the curriculum) is valued immensely by Imperial, and there is recognition that the teaching is a shared activity, delivered by the medical and nursing staff, pharmacists, therapists and many others employed in both hospitals and general practice.
