Teaching methods and assessment
Teaching methods
The teaching for modules 1-5 and 6a is organised into teaching blocks of one-week each. A variety of teaching methods are used. After module 1, teaching is supported by the use of a virtual learning environment (VLE). This offers high-calibre support to a part-time clientele and enables full-time students to maintain contact with their part-time colleagues. (Full induction to the VLE, WebCT ©, is given). Participants are strongly recommended to have ready home access to a networked computer.) Extensive and critical reading is a key part of learning in this discipline. Teaching week blocks have associated pre, during and post reading. Participants are expected to take a high degree of responsibility for their own learning. During the intensive teaching blocks participants are expected to be in London from Monday to Friday.
Assessment
All modules are examined by submission of summative written work. For modules 1-5 and 7 the ‘essay-style’ questions are subject to deadlines and set word counts. The research module is assessed chiefly by means of a project written up as a dissertation. Coursework is used on some modules and counts towards the overall module mark. This takes various forms including formative review tests, oral and written group work, individual oral and written work and demonstration of skills. Coursework may count for a maximum of 30% of the marks for any one module.
