Harriet Gliddon 2011/12 intake
Department of Medicine

Personal photo

Congratulations to Harriet Gliddon for receiving the Award for Outstanding Achievement by the President & Rector at the Postgraduate Graduation Ceremony which took place on 1 May 2013 at the Royal Albert Hall.

Harriet was chair of Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM), at Imperial College London and campaigned to raise awareness of the complex issues that govern access to medicines throughout the world.  She then acted as joint National Coordinator for UAEM in the UK which involved organising various conferences and raising the profile of this campaign within the UK and the rest of Europe.

UAEM is a student-led campaign that began at Yale University in 2001, when students and researchers were joined by Médecins Sans Frontières to campaign for the HIV antiretroviral stavudine to be available for generic production in South Africa. This led to a 30-fold decrease in price, allowing HIV patients to access this life-saving treatment at affordable prices. Since then, UAEM has grown into an international organization, with a membership that includes students from 5 continents and a range of disciplines.
