Professor Nicholas Mazarakis holds the Lucas-Lee Chair of Molecular BioMedicine and is Head of Gene Therapy within the Neurosciences Centre Hammersmith Campus. In Gene Therapy viral based gene transfer systems are utilised both for research and gene therapy applications.
Research is focused on elucidating the molecular pathways of neurodegeneration associated with Parkinson’s disease and Motor Neurone diseases. On the therapy front novel therapeutic strategies are being developed for the treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Huntington’s disease.
His research is supported by several grants including a major European Research Council Advanced Investigators award in 2008.
