Professor Andrew Rice
Neuropathic Pain
We are interested in elucidating the basis of neuropathic pain (pain as a consequence of peripheral nerve damage). We are particularly interested in the consequences of peripheral nerve trauma and viral infections such as HIV or herpes zoster. We work mainly with in vivo animal models and measure both conventional simple pain behaviours and more complex integrated behaviours such as anxiety.
Current areas of activating include uncovering the role of the amygdale in pain related anxiety and the role of injury associated cytokines and chemokines in driving pain. We are also in the process of evaluating novel drug targets which have been revealed by gene microarrays. Finally, we are active in the field of cannabinoid pharmacology.
We are one of 8 labs which comprise the Wellcome Trust funded London Pain Consortium
